“So, what’s your major? When are you graduating?” - An Intern Blog Entry

These are the main questions I am not surprised to hear when I say I am on the job as an intern for the Troy/ Maryville/ St. Jacob/ Marine Chamber of Commerce. Hello, I am Madeleine Renken and I am studying Arts & Technology at Illinois State University.  Unlike the other interns I am working with, I plan to graduate in 2020. So yes, I am a sophomore.

But what better time like the present to get a taste of being a part of a business in reality! I have been sending out press releases and e-news articles, answering telephone calls, helping update the website with all the events happening in the community, designing flyers, assisting at Chamber networking events, making crafts for family nights, calling different businesses, and job shadowing at PR/marketing firms. I could take a menagerie of classes in school for the “real world” but quite honestly, they would never match the skill set I have achieved as a result of this extremely advantageous opportunity to both connect with my community and gain great experience holding a real job at the office.

Even though I could have spent my brief summer so many other ways, I believe I chose the most worthwhile option; I have met and worked alongside a slew of amazing, ambitious, helpful and talented individuals who are passionate about what they do, especially for the betterment of our community. Overall, I am glad to have gained the perspicacity of how imperative the Chamber is to all local businesses and the area as a whole.
